Back to Basics – What Led You to Your Tech Management Role?

We often get caught up in the day-to-day demands of work and lose sight of the bigger picture. As tech managers, we deal with tight deadlines, resource constraints, technical roadblocks, and pressure to deliver. It’s easy to forget why we chose this career in the first place.

Let’s go back to basics. What led you to become a tech manager? Was there an inspirational mentor who modeled great leadership? Did you want to solve complex problems and build things? Did you aspire to lead teams and develop people?

Reconnecting with your origin story can re-ignite your passion.

Here are some questions to ask yourself:

What were your early career goals? How have they evolved over time?

Who inspired you along the way? What lessons did those role models teach you?

What were the fork-in-the-road moments? Looking back, would you choose differently?

How has being a tech manager changed you as a person? What have been the unexpected growth opportunities?

What do you love about your work? What frustrates you or wears you down?

If you could go back 5 or 10 years, what advice would you give your younger self?

The tech industry moves so fast that we rarely slow down to appreciate the journey. But our beginning motivations and experiences shape us. By revisiting your origin story, you can reconnect with your core values and reignite your passion.
